Register Early
Most state homeschooling organizations offer early bird discounts to the public and even greater savings for members. Many times, they give participants an opportunity to join during registration.
In addition to savings, early registrants get in on special events like graduation, guest speaker lunches or dinners and activities for children.
Plan Your Schedule
Review the workshop schedule as well as the hours for the Exhibitor Hall. Refer to your list of priorities (tip #1) to decide which workshop to attend if there is a time conflict. Remember to make time for networking and visiting vendors in addition to any other special program for which you've registered.
Research Exhibitors
While it is difficult to look up what each exhibitor has to offer, a quick review of the vendor list will help some stand out. Make a list of those vendors whose products or services you need to ensure you are not distracted by the dizzying array of displays.
Write out your questions so you get the pertinent information you need to make the best Purchasing decision.
Make a Budget
This one just makes sense. It is too easy to get excited about the latest trend or technology. Let's not forget the beautifully packaged texts and workbooks. Add in food, drinks, and souvenirs and you can see how quickly you could overspend.
Pack Carefully - Items.that are often overlooked are:
Notebook or planner - you will want to take notes on commentary, resources, contact information, etc.
Business Cards - for networking with other attendees, speakers or vendors. Include your name and email address along with any phrases that will jog people's memories. Keep it simple (and inexpensive) and print them on your home printer.
COMFORTABLE Shoes - you're going to be doing a lot of walking. You'll actually want to see the numbers on your smart watch during the convention.
Portable Seating - one year, I hurt my leg just before convention and brought a folding stool (about $10) for long hours in the Exhibitor Hall, long commutes between workshops and the long walk from the parking garage. Many people thanked me for giving them the idea to do the same next year.
Snacks and/or Water - you will pay a high price to buy these items at the convention center. Save your money for worthier causes
Speaking of money, consider bring a small amount of case for vendors who do no accept credit or debit cards.
Bring Someone with You
There are several reasons why this is a great idea.
a. If you are married, bringing your spouse will give you time to reconnect and plan
together. This helps the non-teaching spouse feel included in a substantial way.
b. Bringing a fellow homeschooler allows you to divide and conquer. If there is time
conflict between workshops, you go to one and they can attend the other. If you
both have certain vendors In common, combine your questions and you go to some and they can go to the others. Additionally, you can share your perspectives and ideas from the convention.
Be Open
You will come into contact with people and ideas that are new; they may even make you a little uncomfortable. It is possible to lean in without losing your unique perspective. At best, you can get answers you've been needing. At worst, their views will validate what you believe. Either way, there's growth.
Follow Up
Before you know it, the convention will be over and you are back at home. First, follow up with the connections you made. The more quality support you have, the better your homeschool experience.
Equally important is taking time to review your notes and plan how to implement all you have learned.
In summary, KNOW BEFORE YOU GO. What does your HomeSchool need? What do you want to try? What is needed to complete your academic plan for next year? The answers to those questions will ensure you are productive and get the most value for your time and money.
